Stockholm residents gave 2 099 suggestions of places for new housing

This is a shortened English translation of the article Resultat från YIMBY Stockholms kartenkät - del ett and Resultat från YIMBY Stockholm kartenkät del två.

In the begining of 2017, YIMBY Stockholm held a map questionaire about the development of Stockholm. The target was all people who live or wants to live in Stockholm and a total of 808 people responded. We used the tool Maptionaire to make the survey. The data with the results from the questionnaire is available here.
.

About the respondents
None of the questions were answered by all respondents, at the most there were about 790 answers per question. When the corresponding percentage is presented below that is based on the total number of respondents of the particular question.

62% of the respondents found the questionnaire via Facebook, through the Yimby Stockholm page or other pages. 26% found it via yimby.se and the remaining 13% via a friend, colleague, other social media or else.

Most of the respondents live in the Municipality of Stockholm, 69% of them, but a substantial share,  are living in other municipalities in the County of Stockholm, 21%, or outside the County of Stockholm, 10%.

The average age of the participants was around 37 years. Two thirds of the respondents were men and one third women. The majority of them (63%) lived in Stockholm municipality, about half of that group in the inner city and half outside it. Their most common mode of transport was Public transport, 59%.

Where would you prefer to live?
The participants could choose places where they would prefer to live. Most of them chose places in the inner city.

A place or area for new housing

The participants could register several types of dots in a map. The most popular category were A place or area for new housing, with a total of 2099 dots.

In these spots do the answerors want new buildings.

There is a relatively scattered pattern to the chosen places. Some places are visibly more popular: Bromma Airport, the road spaghetti around the E4 highway at Västra skogen and the central field of Gärdet.

Västra skogen

Gärdet

In the southern part of the city the strongest cluster is found on Årstafältet (The Årsta field).

It is also evident that respondents like to see more construction along some major roads which we will get to further on.

A place for offices, services and shops

There were also a category for offices, services and shops which received 902 dots.

The places that were proposed were fairly similar to those suitable new housing.

An area which is unsafe and should be improved

Unsafe areas were particularly clustered around Sergels Torg, the Central railway station, Medborgarplatsen, the area around Gullmarsplan and the centers of Tensta and Rinkeby.

Arterial road which should be transformed into an urban boulevard
Enköpingsvägen, Frösundaleden, Stadsgårdsleden, Örbyleden

In the category Arterial road that can be transformed into an urban boulevard there were some roads that were particularly pointed out: Enköpingsvägen, Frösundaleden, Solnavägen, Roslagsvägen, Lidingövägen Drottningholmsvägen, Pampaslänken - Klarastrandsleden, Centralbron, Skeppsbron, Stadsgårdsleden, Södertäljevägen, Nynäsvägen and Örbyleden.

Green areas
In the survey it was possible to register different opinions about green areas. The categories were: Not important and can be developed (orange, 967 dots), Important but in need of improvement (yellow, 561 dots) or Here is unique urban greenery (green, 606 dots). Let's zoom in on those areas that received the most attention.

Hagaparken mostly received opinions for preservation and refurbishment.

Hagaparken (The Haga Park)

In the Lill-Jansskogen the opinions goes both ways, many wants to refurbish the park as well as develop it with construction.

Lill-Jansskogen (The Lill-Jan's Forest)

Gärdet field received a majority of opinions (dots) for development whereas the island of Djurgården mostly got votes for preservation.

On the island of Södermalm Drakenbergsparken (in the upper left of the image) where pointed out as in need of refurbishment, Vitabergsparken as a park that should be preserved and Tantolunden got mixed opinions of all three categories.
Södermalm Island and the southern inner suburb of Årsta and Gullmarsplan

None of the respondents marked Årstafältet (Årsta field) as unique nature. It got many votes for building and some refurbishing.

New and improved connections
The respondents could draw suggestion of new or improved connections in the city.

Walking got 468 suggestions. Mostly within and in connection to the inner city.
Walking connections

Biking had 380 connections. Also here many connections to and from the inner city but also cross connections between different central suburbs.
Biking connections

Public transport got many more suggestion than walking and biking (677). There are clear trends, the strongest one a circular connection between the south and east central suburbs and the west and north of the inner city. There's also some strong connections to Älvsjö in the south and the brige to the island Lidingö in the north east.
Public transport connections

Current subway lines in Stockholm

Car connections got the most suggestions. But the majority of these were drawn by just a few respondents who drew suggestion of new street grids in specific areas. One of the respondents drew more than thousand lines.
Car connections

Apart from the street grids, there was one clear area of attention: a connection between the south east and north east of Stockholm.
Car connections in the east

There is currently no connection between these areas. There has been talk about a bridge for over a hundred years, and in more recent years a tunnel. Yimby Stockholm has made our own proposal for a bridge that could enable all modes of transport, while not disturbing the sea traffic or the nature area of Djurgården.

General opinions of development
Participants could also answer general questions about the development of the city.

The most decisive opinion was that central highways should be transformed into city streets and that more bridges should be built.

It's interesting to see that the demand for shorter and/or safer bike routes seems lower than for the other topics. It could be because that question is frasing of that question, with a focus on the need of the respondent rather than just a general need as in the other questions. Or it could be due to the popularity of public transport over biking among respondents.

Representation
One important question of the results is how representative they are for Stockholm residents as a whole. Since YIMBY Stockholm was the maker of the survey most people who participated found it through our channels, though we did reach out to other organizations and media in effort to broaden the sampling group. Regardless, the survey shows a large number of people who want to see a certain development in Stockholm.

Your thoughts
What are tour thoughts about our results? Are they similar to what they would be in your city or do you see differences? What type of questions would you ask in a questionnaire of your own? Let us know in the comments.
